Dell’s Ubuntu computers now have DVD playback

Dell has just announched on it’s Direct2Dell blog that it will be offering legal DVD playback on it’s Ubuntu line of computers. This great news comes with the announcement that it will now also support Ubuntu 7.10 on it’s Linux line-up.

Dell starts selling Ubuntu computers

Dell - Ubuntu deal: technical details

The Direct2Dell blog has more technical details on Dell’s upcoming Ubuntu offer.
Ubuntu will be pre-installed with all hardware working on opensource drivers but proprietary drivers will be present where necessary.
Currently, there will be no proprietary media codecs present but Dell is looking at how they can support this in the future.

Dell announces models with Ubuntu

A Dell employee has given more information about what models will be available with Ubuntu 7.04.
From the email the employee sent Jeremy it seems that Ubuntu will be available as operating system choice when customizing the product:
The goal of launching Linux is to continue to give our customers more choices to customize their new Dell.

Ubuntu preinstalled on Dell computers

According to this article over at DesktopLinux.com, Dell is going to be selling computers preinstalled with Ubuntu.
Starting at the end of May this year, Dell will be offering Ubuntu 7.04 on it’s e-series “Essential” Dimension desktop, an XPS desktop, and an e-series Inspiron laptop.

The Dell-Ubuntu deal: How will Canonical handle the support?

The 451 group has a nice article on how Canonical’s support model will hold up with the Dell-Ubuntu deal.
Dell announced to start selling computers preloaded with Ubuntu. Everone knows Dell isn’t the greatest helpdesk, so Canonical will provide the support.
